Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s most beautiful milestones. Those first few weeks pass incredibly quickly, which is why many parents choose to capture this special stage with professional newborn photography.
One of the most common questions I receive at Captured by Elly is: when should you book your newborn photography session?
The Best Time to Book Your Newborn Photography Session
The best time to book your newborn photography session is during your pregnancy, ideally after your 20-week scan.
Booking early helps secure availability around your due date and allows plenty of time to plan your session without feeling rushed after baby arrives.
Most newborn photography sessions are photographed within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. During this stage, newborn babies are usually sleepier and naturally curl into those soft newborn poses that parents love.
Why Early Booking Matters for Newborn Photography
Newborn photography sessions require flexibility and careful scheduling. Many parents book several months in advance, especially during busy seasons in Sydney such as autumn and spring.
Booking your newborn session early means:
- Your due date is reserved in the calendar
- You avoid last-minute stress
- You have time to plan family and sibling photos
- Your newborn session feels calm and organised
The early newborn stage changes so quickly. Tiny fingers, soft eyelashes and sleepy cuddles can feel like they disappear overnight.
What Happens if Your Baby Arrives Early or Late?
Babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule, and that is completely normal.
When you book your newborn photography session, your due date acts as a placeholder in the calendar. Once your baby arrives, we confirm the final session date together.
At Captured by Elly, every newborn photography session is planned with flexibility in mind.
What to Expect During Your Newborn Photography Session
Newborn photography sessions take place in my cosy Abbotsford studio in Sydney and are designed to feel relaxed and baby-led.
Sessions typically run for around 2 hours, allowing plenty of time for:
- Feeding breaks
- Settling and cuddles
- Family photos
- Sibling photos
- Individual newborn portraits
I provide wraps, blankets, props and styling for your baby. Some dresses are also available for mums to use during the session.
Dogs are welcome too, because pets are family.
When Should You Enquire About Newborn Photography?
If you are currently pregnant, it is never too early to enquire about newborn photography.
Many families contact me during their second trimester to ensure availability around their due date.
Professional newborn photography captures memories that become more meaningful with every passing year. These photographs preserve a season of life that feels tiny, beautiful and impossibly fast all at once.
If you are looking for a newborn photographer in Sydney and would like to book a newborn photography session, I would love to hear from you.
